As a teacher, I aim to create a calm and inclusive space for students, taking their
interests, motivations, and psychological states into consideration. Part of creating this kind of
environment is through a structured setting where students know exactly what they are doing
and what is expected of them. I have come to know through my own experience that this kind
of environment allows students to feel both safe and confident.
My praxis is based on a blend of essentialist and progressive philosophy. In teaching an
essential core of information and skills, I intend to foster the growth required to make educated
decisions. Since we are tasked with teaching students how to succeed in an uncertain future, I
believe that emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving is critical in developing the ability
of students to adapt to whatever life throws at them.
In addition to skills development, I also intend to respect the autonomy of the student.
The role of educational institutions for marginalized communities has historically been to erase
their culture, legitimize the authority of the state, and indoctrinate young minds. However, it is
my intention to build mutually beneficial relationships based on respect between teacher and
student. Personal connections are essential in gaining the consent to teach. That consent is
ultimately given by students, not by my authority. I seek to create a learning environment
where students feel safe to learn, and empowered enough to share.
